I’ll Have A Number 1, With Extra Cheese And A Side Order Of Credit Card Theft.
July 24, 2008 – 9:46 amOn a Wednesday evening after a long days work, my wife and I drove over to a local fast food place for a quick late night dinner. We pulled up to the drive-thru, ordered our food, and then pulled forward to the next pick-up window. My wife and I were just talking about work, and our new home, and what to do with all of our credit card points that we had earned since we had purchased our home. The transaction was standard, the window opened, my wife handed the employee her Visa, we were handed our drinks, food, and then the part I will always remember “Here’s your receipt.” We drove home still discussing the day. We arrived at home sat up to the table, ate the less than mediocre food and went to bed.
The next day I went to work and my wife had the day off. She went on an early morning walk with the dog, got home and started planning her day. In her planning mode she opened her purse looking for something and noticed that her credit card was gone! She started frantically looking for her card in her purse and then in her truck. She remembered the last time she used her credit card was at the fast food restaurant. In panic mode now she jumped into her truck and drove over to the fast food restaurant hoping to retrieve her Visa. The restaurant was serving breakfast with only a shift manager and another employee. The manager didn’t know anything about any credit card and it wasn’t in the safe. Full panic mode now, my wife calls the credit card company and inquired about the last purchase transaction. In between nine o’clock the previous night and eight thirty that mourning someone had used it at four different gas stations with pending transactions and at a local big box retailer where it was then denied. After the credit card was cancelled my wife called the local police department and filed a report.
With the investigation still on-going, I don’t want to give out the details of dollar amounts or locations. However, I am thankful that we used our credit card and not our debit card. The idea of our checking account potentially being jeopardized over seventeen dollars makes me feel sick to my stomach. A few of my co-workers asked me after this happened if I would ever use my credit cards again and I replied to all of them, ”Of course I will, our account was protected.” I am completely new to the idea of making all of my purchases with my credit card and as a new homeowner I wanted my credit card purchases to help me earn Home Depot or Lowes gift cards to spend on home improvement and renovation costs. Even though my wife and I were taken advantage of by a person that saw the opportunity, we will still continue to use our credit card to make all of our purchases. I may be a little leery giving it out next time but I take comfort in knowing that I constantly manage my account and that Visa protects its customers from credit card theft.
