Credit Card Advice for Young Couples

To some, the use of a credit card is completely taboo. Some people in society frown upon using a credit card to make everyday purchases. If used correctly, reward credit cards can pave the way for milestones down the road.

Let me explain.

My husband and I have only been married for 3 1/2 years. We talked about how we wanted to handle our finances before we got married. After we got married, we began using our reward credit card all the time. When we had to pay for gas, we used our reward credit card. When we had to pay for groceries, we used our reward credit card. When we went out on a date, we used our reward credit card.

We would pay off the balance of the credit card every month. We were careful not to spend more than we made each month. So, as we paid off the credit card balance, keeping track of our personal budget and our reward points kept adding up and adding up.

After two years, we had our first baby. I also graduated college. Our reward points came in handy at this point. We could trade in our accumulated points for merchandise or gift cards. We would use these gift cards to buy formula, diapers, baby wipes, bottles, baby blankets, toys, etc. We were able to get hundreds of dollars of baby gear for free, just because we made our everyday purchases with our reward credit card and saved the points.

You certainly don’t have to use your points on one specific thing. In fact, we have paid for the majority of our Christmas gifts by using our reward points. You are able to redeem your points on different things, depending on which reward credit card plan you choose to go with.

It may sound like we are huge ’spenders,’ but we really aren’t. We simply use our reward credit card to make our everyday purchases. We don’t spend more than we make and we pay off the balance every month. That is really the key to using reward credit cards. Make sure that you use the card wisely; Pay if off every month and never spend more than you have.

Choose a reward credit card program that is going to benefit you the most. It won’t take long for you to start racking up those reward points. You can then redeem your points for different merchandise, gift cards or cash back. Reward credit cards are the perfect asset to any young couple to prepare for milestones down the road.
