I agree with most of the points listed here, except that I feel that the post is a little hard on the stores.

I mean, they're only placing stuff to make it more attractive after all. It's not like they are putting stuff into your cart/basket without your knowledge and forcing you to buy it later. While it is true that the store is trying to get you to buy more by trickery, it is after all up to one to exercise self-control.

For example, when you see someone leave that shiny new, expensive electronic toy unattended on their desk - do you just steal it from them? No, because you use your self-control and do the right thing.

these cash back cards can actually be to your advantage. However, i would suggest that, in order to fully enjoy it, one should try paying off any charged amount even before it inures any interest (read: before your credit card's cut-off date)

Credit cards are not such a bad idea only if you know how to discipline yourself

Comment on 2008 Holiday Sales Prediction by Wayne Martin

Of those that have predicted somewhat higher sales the biggest factor is the cost of goods. Since prices have risen the essentials of the holiday will still be bought but at a higher price. This will yield a somewhat distorted picture of "Sales over last year".

Although the gas prices have come down we are not seeing the same decrease for those goods and services. With far less to spend consumers will be looking for a bargain this year more than ever. Items that look more expensive than they are will be the best ticket. Gift cards sales are expected to drop off significantly for this reason.

Still it is not as dismal as it looks. It will be up to the merchants to perform some magic:
1. More people need extra money for those stocking suffers. Add sales and checkout people to shorten those lines. People need little excuse to walk out without buying.
2. Beef up your Gift Card Promotions. For Example, "Ten Percent off gift card purchases when combined with other purchase over $50."
3. Make your gift cards 'good for life" and be happy to collect the float while never having to escheat and lose them to the state.
